Poll: Pongsapat still in the lead

Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen of the Pheu Thai Party is still in the lead in the race to March 3 Bangkok governor election, but there's a big uncommitted vote with just over a week to go, according to the latest survey released on Friday by Bangkok Poll.

The pollster at Bangkok University said opinions were sought from 1,637 eligible voters in Bangkok between Feb 11 and Feb 17.

Asked which candidate the respondents wanted to become the new Bangkok governor, 34.8% of them said Pol Gen Pongsapat, and 27.7% backed Sukhumbhand Paribatra of the Democrat Party - with a significant number of voters still undecided or keeping their choice quiet.

Only 4.5% of the polled voters supported former national police chief Pol Gen Sereepisut Temeeyaves, while 18.2% of them had not yet made a decision and 10.1% said they had made a decision but did not want to reveal it.

Those who supported Pol Gen Pongsapat and MR Sukhumbhand were asked what chance there is of them changing their minds before election day -- 16% of the respondents supporting MR Sukhumbhand said there was a chance, while 18.5% of those backing Pol Gen Pongsapat said they could possibly change their mind.

Asked is there had been any attempts to buy votes in their residential area, 72.1% of said no, 6.8% said yes and 21.1% had no idea.

Asked if they were confident  the Election Commission could ensure a fair and free election, 52.4% said they had high confidence in the commission, 47.6% were less than confident.
