Thaksin ally to be chairman of PTT

Vichet Kasemthongsri, a former deputy transport minister in the Thaksin Shinawatra administration, has been chosen as the new chairman of energy giant PTT Plc, as expected.

Upon board approval, Mr Vichet will replace Norkhun Sitthipong, the energy permanent secretary, who abruptly quit his post as PTT chairman last month.

Mr Norkhun's resignation came shortly after Mr Vichet was appointed as an independent director at PTT and is believed to have stemmed from a clash with Energy Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisal over company operations.

Mr Vichet, 51, joined PTT's board on Jan 18 after the appointment of his predecessor, Mr Pongsak, as energy minister last December.

He served as deputy transport minister from 2003-05 and is one of 111 executive members of the defunct Thai Rak Thai Party who ended their five-year political ban last May.
