B1.02bn of meth pills seized

Police seized a total of 3.4 million methamphetamine pills, worth more than 1.02 billion baht in street value, in three major drug busts, Pol Maj Gen Surapol Thuanthong, deputy commissioner of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau, said on Sunday.

In the northern border province of Chiang Rai, a pickup driver drove through a traffic checkpoint without stopping. The driver then abandoned the pickup truck in a forest.

Inside the vehicle, police found 2.2 million yaba pills and 156 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamines, or ya ice.

The driver was still at large.

In Lampang province on Saturday night, narcotics suppression police arrested five suspects and confiscated a million speed pills at a checkpoint.

One of the suspects, Sompote Khieocha-oum, 31, of Chiang Rai's Mae Suay district, was arrested when a pickup he was driving from Ban Mu Mong Phai in Chiang Mai's Fang district was stopped for a search at the checkpoint on Lampang-Tak road in Lampang's Muang district at 8.50pm.

The drugs were found hidden in the vehicle.

From the questioning of Sompote, police arrested four other suspects in Chiang Mai province.

The third drug bust took place in Samut Sakhon province, where police arrested 10 drug suspects and seized about 200,000 yaba pills.
