Nagatomo limped off during the 1-1 draw with AC Milan on Sunday and underwent tests in midweek.

A statement by the Serie A club issued late Wednesday said Nagatomo had been diagnosed with "a capsular ligament injury to the external meniscus and minor damage to the external ligament".

Inter did not say for how long Nagatomo would be sidelined although it is believed recovery from the injury would take between several weeks and several months.

It is the second major injury blow to Inter in recent weeks after Argentine striker Diego Milito was ruled out for the rest of the campaign with a knee ligament injury.

Inter currently sit fifth in Serie A on 44 points, 14 behind leaders Juventus and one short of city rivals Milan who sit in fourth.
