It's hard to believe but inside this Florida house is a sinkhole eight metres across and much deeper. It suddenly developed on March 1st, swallowing and killing one man. The house was demolished yesterday. AFP

Last Friday in Seffner, a suburb of Tampa, Florida, the concrete slab supporting a four-bedroom home suddenly shattered, forming a massive sinkhole, eight metres across and considerably deeper.
House owner Jeff Bush, 36, was in bed at the time and he was swallowed by the hole, his body never recovered, despite the desperate efforts of his 35-year-old brother Jeremy to save him.
"I heard a loud crash like a car coming through the house and I heard my brother screaming," Jeremy told CNN.
He rushed to his brother’s room, jumped in the hole and started digging without success. He then had to be helped out by rescue workers.
Yesterday, the house was demolished. Outwardly, it looked completely normal, but the hole had weakened its structure and it also poses a threat to surrounding houses which have had to be evacuated.
Sinkholes are common throughout much of the US state of Florida and, indeed, all around the world, including Thailand.
Bangkok drivers are very familiar with sinkholes that suddenly collapse sections of the city’s roads, but they happen frequently in rural areas as well.
Sinkholes form in areas where water flowing underground has dissolved porous rock below the surface. They can form gradually or suddenly and are very difficult to detect or predict.

According to a brochure issued by the Southwest Florida Water Management District, there are several warning signs, however. They include slumping trees or fence posts; the formation of small ponds in areas where water has not collected before; wilting of small, circular areas of vegetation; and structural cracks in walls.
