Police seek foreign robbery gang

Immigration Police are asking for the public's help in tracking down the members of a Guatemalan gang that has been robbing homes in Bung Kum district of Bangkok.

Officers arrested one man while he was breaking into a house but three others fled after a neighbour spotted them and cried out for help.

The arrest of Benjamin Ezequiel Mogollon Lopez, 48 led to the seizure of stolen goods worth 1.5 million baht from an apartment in Chatuchak district.

Police said the suspect admitted he had been robbing houses in Bung Kum with others of Guatemalan descent.

Mogollon Lopez was out on bail when the latest robbery took place on Feb 21, officers said. He had been fighting deportation in connection with another robbery in October last year.

Police said they found stolen jewellery, watches, cash, guns and burglary tools at the gang's hideout.

Police said the gang usually rents a car and drives to areas with big houses. They choose a house, ring the doorbell and if anyone answers, they pretend to be lost and ask for directions. If no one answers, they break into the home.

According to the police, the suspect and three other members of the gang were trying to break into a house in Bung Kum while police were tracking their movements.

Immigration police have asked people to help look out for "suspicious" foreigners who just moved into their neighborhoods. If they don't act like tourists or they seem to be out of work or involved in suspicious activities, people can call 1178.
