PT to petition EC over Dem leaders

Pheu Thai Party's legal team plans to submit to the Election Commission texts of speeches made by core members of the Democrat Party during the last campaign prior to the Mar 3 Bangkok governor election, Prompong Nopparit said on Sunday.

Mr Prompong, the Pheu Thai spokesman, said the texts, extracted from tapes and videotapes of the campaign speeches, could be evidence of violations of Section 57 (5) of the Local Election Act against nine core members of the Democrat Party as well as MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra, the Democrat candidate who won the election.

The speeches, he said, contained mudslinging comments and false accusations against Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen, the Pheu Thai candidate in the gubernatorial election.

Mr Prompong claimed that of the nine Democrat core members, seven had clearly violated the Local Election Act. They were Abhisit Vejjajiva, the party leader, Suthep Thaugsuban, Chuan Leekpai, Issara Somchai, Jurin Laksanavisit, Korn Chatikavanij and Sirichok Sopha.

Pheu Thai would tomorrow make a summary of the speeches and submit it with related evidence to the EC for consideration, he said.

Mr Prompong said the texts extracted from tapes and videotapes would not be edited or distorted.

The Democrat Party's campaign director Ong-art Klampaiboon said members of the Democrat Party had been careful not to violate the election or any other laws.

In its campaign, the Democrats presented facts to the people without persecution.

The Democrat Party was ready to testify to the EC to show sincerity, Mr Ong-art said.
