EC asked to probe Dems' speeches

The Pheu Thai Party on Monday petitioned the Election Commission to investigate speeches by four leading members of the Democrat Party during the election campaign for the March 3 Bangkok governor election.

It was alleged they violated Section 57 of the Local Election Act.

The four Democrats named in the petition, filed by Winyat Chartmontree, a member of Pheu Thai's legal team, are Suthep Thaugsuban, a Surat Thani MP, and party list MPs Jurin Laksanavisit, Issara Somchai and Korn Chatikavanij.

Video clips of the speeches taken from the Democrat Party's website and YouTube were included with the petition letter.

The petition alleged the four Democrat members, in their speeches supporting MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra asked constituents not to vote for Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen because he represented a party which set the city on fire.

If the Pheu Thai candidate was elected, the Pheu Thai Party would monopolise the country, according to the four Democrats.

According to the petition, a pink campaign sticker stating "Join hands to oppose monopolisation of the country" distributed shortly before election day misled voters into voting for MR Sukhumbhand.

The EC was, therefore, asked to examine the speeches to see if they were in violation of Section 57 of the Local Election Act.
