The fashion world lost legendary couturier Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) in 2008. In the same year, cosmetics giant L'Oreal took YSL Beaute under its wing, strengthening it as the global brand. It has now made a comeback in the Thai market with its first counter opening earlier this month at Central Chidlom.
The brand’s DNA includes illuminating the skin with the use of beauty products.
YSL fans can check out the couture make-up in golden cases and classic perfumes as well as the latest fragrance for women, Manifesto, which proposes a great new statement of free, bold and excessive femininity.
The reintroduction also presents new skincare proposals to be as competitive as sister brands, such as Biotherm and Lancome, in the anti-ageing and whitening categories.
"This is a new chapter for YSL Beaute as we are returning with a stronger skincare science," said Caroline Negre, scientific communication manager at the launch event recently held at the W Hotel Bangkok.
"Innovation is obviously a part of our DNA and we are a breakthrough brand that can rock the boat in the beauty industry in the same way that YSL revolutionised fashion."
After debuting in 1961, the fashion house gave women a rebellious wardrobe that included the tuxedo, the pilot coat and safari jacket, which empowered the fairer sex to dress like a man. Beauty products followed in 1978 to fulfill the French designer's desire: "I needed to give a face to the woman I dress."

The face can now boast a better-looking complexion as the French brand claims to be the first to apply glycobiology in making skincare products, initially with the 2011 launch of Forever Youth Liberator, followed by Forever Light Creator introduced this year.
Glycobiology is the study of the structure, biosynthesis and the biology of saccharides (sugar chains or glycans), and their applications in medicine include drug and vaccine design, whereas in cosmetology, it opened a new avenue in restoring youthfulness and radiance.
"The YSL SkinScience Committee of experts was established to apply research findings in glycobiology to answer women's needs in terms of skincare efficacy, resulting in the anti-ageing ingredient Glycanactif and now the Glycanactif WT Complex, which addresses the problem of dull-looking skin," said Negre, who has a background in biotechnology engineering.
Glycans are major constituents of the skin, she explained, and different types have been identified in skin cells. From transmitting biological messages to transferring melanin (skin pigment) from one cell to another, they play important roles in cell functions. Ageing, however, causes both qualitative and quantitative changes in glycans, and replenishing them became the latest skincare approach.
The product development of Forever Light Creator was also based on understanding women's ideal complexion from a survey conducted across the world.
In the US, for instance, women want to have smooth radiant skin without the presence of wrinkles, age spots or rosacea, whereas Japanese women dream of having a pale, radiant and flawless complexion because white skin is a sign of beauty and femininity.
"Women are keenly attuned to radiance. They want a luminous complexion.
But the main factor for determining whether skin is considered beautiful or not is its ability to reflect light in a uniform manner without colour discrepancies, shady zones or spots of any kind," said dermatologist Dr Thierry Michaud, a member of the YSL SkinScience Committee.
The Forever Light Creator Serum is claimed to act on light sources to brighten the complexion from within, which corresponds to the brand's DNA in illuminating the skin with the use of beauty products.
"To each woman let there be light" was actually the motto of Touche Eclat, an iconic highlighter pen which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. Formulated with a complex featuring two types of pigments, the must-have make-up catches the light, banishes shadows and smooths imperfections.
"Touche Eclat is an essential beauty product, as a base or for touch-ups to illuminate the skin with a ribbon of light. Our foundations have also been designed to catch the light and thus enhance skin radiance.
"The make-up products are now complemented with the Forever Light Creator skincare that can further help recreate luminous skin," Negre said.
The Forever Light Creator collection features Glycanactif WT Complex with a combination of three glycans.
