Police: Sorry grandpa, wrong man

Police: Sorry grandpa, wrong man

Police admit they made a blunder in obtaining an arrest warrant on burglary charges for a 79-year-old man who has trouble walking.

Nu Klangched, 79, accompanied by his son and a lawyer, met with the chief investigator of Hat Yai police, in Songkhla province, after being served with an arrest warrant issued by a court at the request of police.

He was charged with breaking and entering, and burglary. He strongly denied all charges.

Mr Nu told police he had never been to Hat Yai before. Moreover, he cannot walk without using a cane, making it most unlikely he could ever be a burglar.

Pol Lt Col Phattareeya Pannim admitted police might have made a mistake in their investigation.

She had asked the accused man to bring in a certificate signed by his doctor as evidence of his poor mobility, but she was quite sure that the 79-year-old was not the burglar being sought in the case, she said.
