Welcome to Guru 's Gate Crasher, your ultimate guide to finding something fresh to do in this big city.
For its second Sunday-session instalment of the year, Kolour returns on Sun (Mar 17) with a Carnival to ruin any plans you had of starting the week on a healthy note. After the big success of Nakadia behind the decks at the last party, the crew are a little more cagey about the DJ line-up, but the sun should shine and the beats will roll. And with a carnival atmosphere promised, what could go wrong? Come and find out. Party starts 1:30pm, and will peak at sunset with a 10pm finish if you're smart. Otherwise there's the inevitable after party, probably at Levels. Tickets are B400 (www.amiando.com/KolourCarnival.html) as pre-sale, or B500 on the door. Surfing packages are also available. Venue is Flow House (A Square, Sukhumvit Soi 26, 02-108-5210), which has drawn criticism and praise, but it's the last party there. Will we see a return to the river by the crew, or will they stay truly committed to discovering new venues (in a city with limited scope)? Let's see what Coran has up his sleeve.
This weekend is jam-packed with goodies, starting tonight (Mar 15) with a couple of creative soirees. First up is the second instalment in its series of artists, URFACE x P7. True to the flavour of the month in street art, the guest is graf man P7. Party starts at 7pm and the cool crowd should pose late. Venue is Badmotel (2/F, Sukhumvit Soi 55, near Thong Lor Soi 15, 02-712-7288, facebook.com/badmotel). Entry is free, as is the booze, so get there early. For something a little more fringe, try Nirosta Steel Live in Bangkok: improv song & instrumental happenning at WTF Gallery (7 Sukhumvit Soi 51, www.wtfbangkok.com). The act will showcase the audio musings of experimental musician Steven Hall to open your minds and ears. Show starts around 9pm with free entry.
Also on Sat (Mar 16) eve is UK DJ Trus'me at new darling spot Grease (2/F, Club LSD, Sukhumvit Soi 49). Just when you thought you might take the night off... Entry is B400 and the sound system should pound below that genuinely impressive LED roof. Party starts at 10pm. Might be busy, so hopefully they will open up the other floors.
Not to be left out of the festival action over the weekend, With Love are hosting a swathe of DJs on Sat (Mar 16) at Party Animals with a long line-up. Afternoon venue (2-10pm) is Viva & Aviv The River (River City, 23 Yotha Road, 02-639-6305) amongst the river serenity and chaos with B400 entry. Phase two will be at Tapas Room Club (114/17-18 Silom Soi 4, facebook.com/tapas.room) for B350 entry (10pm-3am). Gate Crasher spoke with headliners Animal Trainer on the eve of the show.
