Thais dominate India Masters

NEW DELHI - Thai golfers took three of the five top spots after the second day of the Avantha Masters on Friday, but Thongchai Jaidee's dream of playing in another Masters were shattered.

Chapchai Nirat in first, Chawalit Plaphol in third and Chinnarat Phadunsil in fifth were grouped at the top of the leaderboard.

Chapchai shot his second consecutive six-under par 66 on Friday, the same feat as Liang Wenchong of China, and the two led the rest of the field by two shots heading into Saturday's round.

Chawalit followed up his first round of 66 with a 68 on Friday, while Chinnarat, who almost broke the Jaypee Greens course record with a 61 on Thursday, fell to Earth with a two-over par 74 on Friday.

David Drysdale of Scotland is the only non-Asian in the top five.

Thongchai entered the tournament determined to win, because a win would promote him into an automatic invitation to play at the Masters at Augusta, Georgia, next month.

But the former paratrooper never got a look in. He fired a 70 on Thursday, and was on his way to the same score on Friday. That would put him in a tie for 38th place, two-under, eight shots behind Chapchai and Liang.
