On the last day of a tournament that suffered numerous weather setbacks, Prayad fired seven birdies to card 64 and head the field with a four-day total of 264, a full 24 shots under par.

Australia's Nick Cullen finished third at 21-under, followed by six players tied for fourth place.

He is only the third Thai ever to have won the tournament. Boonchu Ruangkit won in 2004 and 1992, while Suthep Meesawat was champion in 1991.

Ironically, most of the top Thai golfers went to India this weekend to play in the Avantha Masters.

"This means so much to me," an emotional Prayad said moments after signing his scorecard.

"Yes I cried a bit...  I am happy the King's Trophy will stay in Thailand."

Urged on by his fellow professionals, Prayad took a celebratory jump into the lake adjoining the 18th green after the prize presentation.

"I have waited so long for this. It is something that I have dreamed about, but I have tried so many times and failed. This time it was my turn. I am so happy," he said.

Strange pushed Prayad all the way, but a bogey on the last left him two strokes adrift. Countryman Nick Cullen (65) was a shot further behind while six players shared fourth place - including defending champion Chris Wood (70).
