Footage from a surveillance camera at the bank showed an unidentified man of large build, wearing a full face helmet entering the bank in Big C supermarket on Nittayo Road at 4pm and threatening a female employee with what appeared to be a garden or kitchen knife, about 40 cm long.

He climbed over the counter, collected cash from several drawers, stuffed the money into a bag, and fled on a motorcycle.

The robber took only 30 seconds to carry out the heist when the bank was full of customers.

Witnesses told police the robber fled into Soi Pakarung in the municipal area and fell off his motorbike, injuring his right leg, but managed to get up and continue riding.

Details were unclear on why the bank’s security failed to prevent the robbery.

Pol Maj Gen Boonlua Korbangyang, chief of Udon Thani police, said the culprit was likely to be a local and not a professional robber as he only carried a knife commonly used by households.
