EC delays governor endorsement

The Election Commission will not decide this week whether to endorse the election of MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra as Bangkok governor, commissioner Prapan Naigowit said on Monday.

Mr Prapan, the commissioner in charge of election administration, said the EC had to put on hold the endorsement of MR Sukhumbhand, who won the March 3 gubernatorial election, to allow investigators to consider petitions against the election result.

The EC expected to get the investigation result for consideration next week.

If investigators could not finish their inquiries within 30 days of the polls, or by April 2, the EC would have to endorse the election of MR Sukhumbhand, but the investigation would continue after that, he said.

If the petitions were found to have grounds, the EC would forward the case to the Constitution Court for consideration, Mr Prapan said.

Mr Prapan also said the EC would this afternoon consider a draft royal decree to set the date for a by-election in Chiang Mai's constituency 3 so that it could be submitted to the cabinet for approval tomorrow.

The by-election would likely be tentatively scheduled for April 21, he said.
