18 illegal Cambodian workers caught

Police arrested 18 Cambodian workers hidden in a pickup truck in Bangkok early Saturday.

Pol Sen Sgt Maj Panuwat Rompong, of Phaya Thai police station, said Boonkong Sukjan, 43, the truck driver, tried to speed away from a checkpoint on Sri Ayutthaya road. An officer then fired at the vehicle to deflate the tyre.

Eighteen illegal immigrants from Cambodia were found hidden under bags of clothes in the pickup truck. Three of them were under 18 years old.

According to police, Boonkong confessed that he had been hired to deliver Cambodian workers from the border province of Sa Kaeo and that he was paid 1,300 baht per head.

The driver and the 18 Cambodians were taken to Phaya Thai police station for further questioning.
