A woman assistant village chief was shot dead in Pattani's Khok Pho district on Monday morning, reports said.
The attack occurred about 10.50am as Nukul Pandaeng, 33, assistant chief of moo 7 in tambon Khuan Nuri was returning home on a motorcycle along the Naket - Mae Lan road.
Two men followed her on a motorcycle and the pillion rider opened fire at her with a pistol, shooting her dead, the reports said.
Police recovered four spent 9mm shells at the scene.
