Governor predicts border trade spike

TAK - Cross-border trade between Thailand's Mae Sot and Myanmar's Myawaddy is expected to exceed 100 billion baht this year after Myanmar lifted a ban on certain imports and exports.

Tak governor Suriya Prasartbandit on Monday said Myanmar recently lifted its ban on 166 imported items from Thailand and 152 items for export.

The lifting of the ban was part of Myanmar's preparations for the Asean Economic Community.

He expected cross-border trade between Mae Sot and Myawaddy would grow sharply to more 100 billion baht this year following the ban's lifting.

Last year, almost 40 million baht worth of trade took place between the two border towns.

Mr Suriya said the Thai embassy in Yangon had told him Myanmar was preparing to permanently open the Myawaddy-Mae Sot checkpoint soon.
