This year's entry to the "Call of Duty" franchise will be called "Call of Duty: Ghosts," takes place in the future, and features a number of nifty gameplay tweaks, according to an established YouTuber and "Call of Duty" player.
The next "Call of Duty" game will be the tenth in eleven years.
In a video posted on March 21, YouTube user Drift0r described his information as coming from "an insider" who was "part of the Call of Duty machine" and "the most direct and trustworthy source that I'm ever going to get anywhere."
Where "Call of Duty: Black Ops II" contained storylines set in the 1980s and a near-future 2025, "Call of Duty: Ghosts" is said to be set in the future but, for unidentified reasons, features modern weapons rather than a fictional, forthcoming armory.
In terms of new gameplay mechanics, players will find themselves able to shoot while dashing and sliding, and roll to the side while prone as in cult PC hit "Day Z."
And in a nod to the "Battlefield" series, destructable environments are to be given greater prominence, with one of the more recent "Black Ops II" levels, "Hydro," also referenced.
May 1 was identified as a key date for a big, official announcement from series publisher Activision.
Should Activision and Microsoft continue their practice of promoting "Call of Duty" games via the Xbox brand of consoles, that could be taken to imply an announcement of the new Xbox before or at the same time as any upcoming "Call of Duty: Ghosts" reveal.
