China took "necessary and proper" action against Vietnamese fishing boats it accused of entering its territory in a disputed area of the South China Sea last week, the government said on Tuesday.
The Vietnamese boats had "worked illegally" near the Paracel islands, known as the Xisha in China, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told reporters.
Hong did not confirm Vietnamese reports that a Chinese maritime patrol vessel pursued one Vietnamese boat for 30 minutes before opening fire on Wednesday.
"China's actions are necessary and proper," he said when asked about the incident.
Hong said the Chinese government had urged Vietnam to "take effective measures and enhance education and management" of fishing crews operating in the area.
The shots from the Chinese ship sparked a blaze on board the Vietnamese boat, but no one was injured, the Vietnamese government said.
