Cash throw away highlights ordination

PHICHIT – The ordination ceremony of a young man made local headlines after his father tossed about 150,000 baht in the air for well-wishers to gather as part of the celebration.

The ordination of the young monk was held in Wat Phai Tha Pho Tai in Phoprathapchang district in Phichit province on Tuesday.

The father of the novice monk, Somsak Ngamprasert, is the owner of a clothing factory.

He said he was happy with his son's ordination, as it is a path young Buddhist men must follow to return the love and respect of their parents.

Most of the ceremony was ordinary, but the unexpected highlight was the scattering of coins and notes totalling at least 150,000 baht among the crowd, or ploy than.

He said distribution of the money to less well off people would help cleanse his soul and bring prosperity and luck to his family.

Mr Somsak is a local philanthrophist known to have donated large amounts of money to charities and for the building of schools.

It took over an hour to scatter the money, according to reports. About 20 police and volunteers were at hand to ensure everything went well.
