Avenue likely to be F1 venue

Ratchadamnoen Avenue is likely to be the main route for Thailand's first Formula One race, officials said yesterday.

Officials from the Sports Authority of Thailand, motorsport's governing body FIA, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and Royal Automobile Association of Thailand met yesterday to discuss a plan for a Grand Prix race which is expected to be held in Bangkok in 2015.

They initially agreed to use a 5km route along Ratchadamnoen Avenue and Din So Road with the drivers going past places such as the Grand Palace, Giant Swing, Wat Suthat and Navy Club, said Ruj Saeng-udom, chief of the SAT governor's office.

The paddock and spectator stands would be at Sanam Luang.

While the TV audience worldwide would see beautiful places, it would be convenient for transportation of cars and other equipment as the proposed site is near the Chao Phraya River.

Concerned parties will draw a master plan and seek Cabinet approval within six weeks.

SAT governor Kanokphand Chulakasem said this week a Bangkok race is on the 2015 Formula One calendar but it will become official only after both parties sign a contract.

Kanokphand also said the event would be a night race like the Singapore Grand Prix.
