Hi-tech 20-baht banknote coming Monday

This April 1st, if you get an unusual-looking 20-baht banknote, it's not an April Fool’s joke.

That is the day – this coming Monday – when the Bank of Thailand is issuing a new series of 20-baht banknotes.

The size will be the same as the current series, 72 by 138 millimetres, but if you look closely, you will find many differences.

The new notes have high-technology anti-counterfeiting measures, making it easier for counting machines, vending machines – and people – to identify. They also have Braille so the blind can identify their value. The watermark of the Thai numeral 20 is especially transparent when held against the light and the vertical green security thread embedded into the paper will change to the colour of red-purple when the user tilts the new banknotes.

The banknotes are made of better quality paper to allow them to be used for a longer time.

The back of the new banknote will have a portrait of King Ramkhamhaeng as a tribute to the great Siamese monarch.

The 20-baht banknotes are most used among the five denominations of 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 baht, according to the central bank.
