A defence volunteer was shot and critically injured in Panare district of Pattani province on Friday afternoon, police said.
He was identified as Abdulloh Pohkoh, 42, a defence volunteer of Panare district.
Pol Col Manit Yimsai, chief of Panare police station, said witnesses told police that Mr Abdolloh was parking his motorcycle in front of a mosque at Ban Nambor in tambon Nambon Nambor of Panare when a gunman arrived on a motorcycle, walked up to him and shot him in the head at close range.
Mr Abdulloh fell to the ground and the gunman shot him once again in his body and then fled. Mr Abdulloh wastaken to Pattani hospital and reported to be in a critical condition.
Police blamed separatist militants.
