Police on Monday arrested a 17-year-old boy accused of killing his father during a drunken brawl in Lampang province last month.
Police said the boy, whose name was withheld because he is a minor, went into hiding after he allegedly killed his father by hitting him in the head with a piece of wood at their home in Lampang's Muang district on March 7.
According to witnesses, the father and son were drinking together before they exchanged heated words. They yelled at each other for a while before the teenager attacked his father.
Neighbours rushed the unconscious father to hospital. He remained in a coma until he died on Sunday.
Pol Capt Kraisorn Chaiya-in, chief investigator of the case, said he obtained an arrest warrant from the court and apprehended the boy, who was found lurking around his home on Monday.
The boy told investigators he had been hiding at his grandfather's home since the incident and that he had returned home to ask his mother for some pocket money.
The boy said he attacked his father because he was upset that his father regularly beat up his mother when he was drunk, according to police.
The 17-year-old said he was regularly informed about his father's condition after the attack but he did not talk to his mother on Sunday night, so he was not aware that his father had died.
The boy would be sent to a youth detention facility until his court hearing, police said.
