Soldier abducted from home in South

A soldier was abducted by eight armed men wearing military-style uniforms from his home in Narathiwat's Rueso district on Monday night.

The abduction was reported to Rueso police ton Tuesday by his wife.

The abductee is Pvt Ma-ila Tolu, 27, a soldier of the 3rd Infantry Regiment, part of the South Marine Division.

Pvt Ma-ila was assigned to the marine base at Ban Yuelo in tambon Bare Tai of Bacho district that was attacked by militants on Feb 13, when 16 of the attackers were killed.

Darisa Sophi, 22, Pvt Ma-ila's wife, told police that the abduction occured about 7pm when she was away from home to buy food. Her husband, who was on a six-day leave, was in their house with her younger brother Yakariya Sophi, 20.

Eight armed men in military-type uniforms arrived in a pick-up truck.  Two of them waited in front of the house.  Six went into the house and one of them held Mr Yakariya at rifle point while the others forcefully took Pvt Ma-ila to the pick-up truck.  The men then left with her husband.

Ms Darisa believed the armed men were militants intent on revenge.

Police were investigating.
