New BlackBerry arrives Friday

The new Z10 smartphone by BlackBerry will be available for tryout on Friday, and then go on sale in Thailand by the end of the month.

BlackBerry said all three major mobile phone networks will support the Z10, the company's attempt to catch up with smartphone technology.

AIS, DTAC and True Move have reportedly reached agreement to sell the Z10 for 20,990 baht before the end of the month.

The BlackBerry company - the Canadian firm changed its name last February - maintains a Thai-language website and a Facebook page, both of which were updated with Z10 information on Wednesday.

The social media said the Z10 will be available in two colours - black or white.

Consumers can try out the Z10 at the BlackBerry Experience Center, Siam Center. Mobile networks will take advance orders of the phone from Friday.

The Z10 is a vastly different phone in look and feel from "the BB" which was briefly Thailand's most popular up-market phone. It has no physical keyboard, although it continues to work on the proprietary BlackBerry network.

The phone runs on a 1.5 GHz processor, and core phones have 2 GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory. The Z10 takes add-on memory cards of up to 64GB.

It has a 5.12-inch screen, bigger than the Apple iPhone 5, but smaller than both its other chief rivals in the marketplace, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One.

Like most popular Apple and Android smartphones, the Z10 takes input through the touch screen. Phones sold in Thailand will have full support for Thai language.

The Z10 has received mostly friendly reviews in the past two months in regions where it was released.
