Narathiwat bomb wounds volunteer

A defence volunteer was slightly injured by a bomb explosion in Si Sakhon district of Narathiwat on Saturday, police said.

The attack took place at 11.40am on the Dusong Majae-Choeng Khiri road at Ban Dusong Majae in tambon Sakor, said Pol Sub-Lt Preecha Ratchayotha, a duty officer at Si Sakhon police station.

He led officers to inspect the scene and found a bullet-proof pickup truck owned by Si Sakhon district parked by the roadside.

Virote Thoburi, 35, a territorial defence volunteer, told police that he and five other volunteers were travelling in the pickup when a five-kilogramme bomb buried by the roadside was detonated. He was slightly wounded in the explosion.

The driver parked the pickup about 30 metres from the blast site while volunteers opened fire into the forest with assault rifles to prevent any further attack, he added.

The volunteers then searched the forest and found that the attackers had fled. They then took Mr Virote to Si Sakhon hospital.

Police blamed separatist militants.
