Health minister: Splash water gently

The Ministry of Public Health has urged Songkran revellers to splash water in a courteous manner in accordance with tradition for their own safety.

Public Health Minister Pradit Sinthawanarong said on Thursday that he hoped people would be careful, gentle and enjoy the festival in a traditional way.

Mr Pradit said people should ask permission before splashing water on each other.

"I'm worried about people playing with water on the back of motor vehicles.

"If water is splashed too hard they may fall off, the way most accidents occur during this festive celebration," the minister said.

He urged people to use safe and approved items, such as powder which contains appropriate information and ingredients on the package, to prevent exposure to harmful chemicals.

According to statistics for 2012, over the "Seven Dangerous Days" period there were 3,129 accidents, 3,320 injuries and 320 deaths.
