Female medical student found dead in dormitory

CHON BURI : A 21-year-old Burapha University's medical student was found dead in a dormitory room yesterday morning.

The body of Witchuta Tamraphab, 20, a third-year medical student at Burapha's faculty of medicine, was found by a friend lying half-naked on the bed in her room in the campus of the Bang Saen-based university.

Police believe she died one or two days earlier and do not suspect foul play, as no traces of physical assault were found.

Pisit Piriyapan, dean of Bhurapha University's medicine faculty, said that he believed the student was not murdered

Dr Pisit said the university dorm had strict security measures.

The dorm's CCTV camera footage shows Witchuta returned to her room on Wednesday evening.

The footage showed that nobody else entered the room until Witchuta's friend and a dormitory security guard broke in after her mother asked them to find her.

Police found a bottle of water, a half-eaten watermelon and a pack of dried pork on the table in the room.

Dr Pisit suspected the student might have eaten the watermelon before going to bed following a day-long Songkran celebration. He thinks she may have fallen asleep quickly after the Songkran exertions and choked on the fruit as she slept.

Witchuta's mother, Jintana Chokejanya, said she last talked on the phone with her daughter on Wednesday.

Witchuta said she would visit her home in Sattahip district after celebrating Songkran with her university friends.

Mrs Jintana said she asked Witchuta's friend to check the room after she could not contact her daughter on Thursday.

The friend was in Bangkok at the time and promised to check up on Witchuta when she returned two days later.

Witchuta's body was sent for an autopsy at Chon Buri Hospital yesterday.
