Released prisoner sets wife on fire

AYUTTHAYA - A man accused of setting his wife ablaze because she refused to move back in with him after he was released from prison is now being hunted by police, Ayutthaya police chief Pol Maj Gen Korn-eak Phetchaiyawet said on Monday.

He said Artit Chankham, 30, could not have gone far because he does not have much money. Two police teams were tracking him down.

Nantawan Pakwichai, 31, was set on fire on April 20 on Udom Sorayuth Road, Bang Pa-in district.

Pol Maj Gen Korn-eak said her husband, Artit, was jailed on drug charges and released two months ago. He tried to get back together with his wife but she refused him because of his aggressiveness and constant involvement with illegal drugs.

Ms Nantawan was seriously injured in the attack, with severe burns to about 50% of her body. She is in a critical condition at Rajthanee Hospital.

Pol Maj Gen Korn-eak said the suspect will be charged with attempted murder when he is captured.
