Nine arrested in drug busts

Nine people were arrested on Sunday with large quantities of methamphetamine pills and crystal methamphetamine, worth around 200 million baht in total, in three separate actions.

The arrests were announced at a press conference on Monday by Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaew, the police chief, and Pol Lt-Gen Panu Kerdlappol, the immigration police chief.

A man and a woman were arrested on Sunday in possession of 64,000 methamphetamine pills and 30kg of methamphetamine crystals, known as "ya ice", smuggled from a neighbouring country.

Acting on information obtained by the Immigration Police Bureau, Banphot Phisai district, police set up a checkpoint between kilometre markers 373-374 in Nakhon Sawan and intercepted a truck loaded with paddy rice. The drugs were found hidden in the truck during a subsequent search.

Thiang Yudee, 53, and Chonlada Waiyo, 28, were arrested and charged with having drugs in possession with intent to sell.

Mr Thiang allegedly admitted to having accepted payment of 1.6 million baht to deliver the drugs, while Ms Chonlada denied any knowledge about the drugs.

In other actions, Narcotics Suppression Bureau police arrested five Hmong tribesmen with 400,000 methamphetamine pills and 13kg crystal methamphetamine in front of Tha Ton market in Chiang Mai's Mae Ai district on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, two Karen men, aged 46 and 16, were arrested in Bangkok's Klong Toey area with 20,000 methamphetamine pills.
