Weng wants terrorism charge reviewed

Weng Tojirakarn, a core member of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), has asked the attorney general to review and withdraw terrorism charges against 24 UDD leaders, including himself.

The Pheu Thai Party list MP said he did so by submitting an open letter to the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) on Tuesday morning.

In the letter, Mr Weng asked the attorney general to give him and other UDD core members justice, saying that they had been indicted on terrorism and other charges in connection with the red-shirt protests in 2010 by the OAG as recommended by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI).

He said the UDD core members at the time were not given protection under Sections 39 and 40 and had no chance to fight the case because they were then in detention.

Since the Criminal Court has acquitted the red shirts in several cases, the terrorism charge might now not carry enough weight.

Therefore, the attorney general has been asked to review the terrorism charge and withdraw the case from the Criminal Court, Mr Weng said.
