Kompayak chases title

Thailand's Kompayak Por Pramuk will fight Jean Piero Perez of Venezuela for the vacant WBA interim flyweight title in Khon Kaen on Friday.

Kompayak Por Pramuk, left, will fight Jean Piero Perez on Friday.

After yesterday's medical check-up, both fighters were confirmed to be in great shape. However, the 32-year-old Perez is 9cm taller and his reach is 7cm longer.

The fight against the Venezuelan is an attempt for Kompayak to become a world champion again after losing his WBC junior-flyweight belt to Adrian Hernandez in Mexico in October.

An interim champion will have a high chance of challenging for the world title.

Ranked third in the 112-pound division, the 30-year-old Thai (49-4-0, 34KOs) seemed to be vulnerable on his chin after being stopped by Hernandez.

But his trainer Chatchai Sasakul believes his boxer is not that weak.

"I believe Kompayak is strong enough to knock out Perez," he said.

"Kompayak will move forward and my only concern is his defence."

With an impressive record of 20-5-1 (14KOs), the Venezuelan, ranked sixth in the division, is not to be underestimated, Chatchai said.

The fight will be live on Channel 7 from 2pm.
