Mother, daughter slain in Songkhla

A gunman wearing a motorcycle helmet shot dead a woman and her daughter in their house in Songkhla province on Thursday, in what police suspect may have been a revenge killing linked to illegal business dealings.

Pol Capt Amnat Anantaphand, of Songkhla police, said he received a report at 7am that two women had been killed in their house, which they also operated as a grocery store, in Muang district.

He said each of them was shot three times in the head and body with 11mm bullets. Six spent shell casings were found at the scene.

The two were named as Somjai Dam-on, 36, and Thaticha Mad, 21.

According to police investigators, the gunman parked his motorcycle, which had no licence plate, in front of the women's house and entered the premises carrying a firearm and wearing a motorcycle helmet that concealed his face.

After killing Somjai and her daughter, the gunman quickly fled. Nothing was stolen from the house.

Police suspected the murders were linked to an illegal business operated by Somjai's husband, who is in Songkhla prison on a murder charge. This morning's attack could have been an act of revenge, police speculated.

The investigation was continuing.
