Military rangers and police clashed with the militants who were hiding in tambon Bannang Sata. During the 30 minute fight all three were shot.

One of the militants was killed on the spot. Security forces then followed a blood trail which led to the other two men, who resisted and died in another shootout.

None of the dead bodies had been identified. Three rifles and one pistol were seized after the fight.

The shooting comes two days before the anniversary of the Krue Se tragedy, as authorities tighten security measures in the far South to prevent possible violence.

Thirty-two people who had taken refuge in the mosque were killed when soldiers stormed the religious building in Pattani's Muang district on April 28, 2004 after a day of widespread violence.

No extra security measures were in force at Kru Se on Friday, and people visited the mosque as usual.
