The importance of china

More input from the booming market is now being placed into concept cars like Nissan's flashy Friend-ME

Nissan Friend-ME

What is it?

Nissan says this is a youth-inspired 2+2 saloon in which all occupants are treated "equally", hence the ability of the three passengers to share the same information as the driver.

Will it be made? It shouldn't, but it could influence the face of a dearly-awaited replacement for the Sylvia to rival the Toyota 86.

Toyota FT-HT

What is it?

Toyota is exploring the possibility of making a six-seat vehicle with hybrid power. Note the extremely compact packaging and a promising design theme to quell criticism of today's bland-looking cars.

Will it be made? Now that Honda has made the Concept S as the Jade, Toyota could follow suit.

Volkswagen Cross Blue Coupe

What is it?

After showing the CrossBlue as a proper SUV with seven seats in Detroit earlier this year, VW has followed up with a sportier version featuring a 415hp V6 and electric plug-in hybrid.

Will it be made? Since it uses the brand's ultra-flexible MQB platform, there's a chance of seeing it as a downmarket X6.

Buick Riviera

What is it?

This is a futuristic coupe with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain whose electric power can optionally be rejuvenated via a wireless recharging pad, aside from the conventional socket.

Will it be made? Unlikely, but General Motors says the face points to a new direction for the growing brand in China.
