Two policemen suspended over misconduct

Two Bangkok police officers accused of abduction, rape and attempted rape were relieved of their duties on Monday, Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Kamronwit Thoopkrachang said.

Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit said Pol Sub Lt Thatree Suebsamarn, deputy inspector at Thonglor police station, accused of abducting and raping a Lao teenager, was found to be at fault and has been suspended.

He said Pol Sen Sgt Maj Worawit Nukulkij, squad leader at Din Daeng police station, was caught on tape fleeing from a group of men and is under investigation.

Police have decided to suspend Pol Sen Sgt Maj Worawit, he added.

Pol Maj Gen Wichanwat Borirakkun, the Metropolitan Police Division 1 commander, explained that Pol Sen Sgt Maj Worawit requested leave to take a promotional exam in Songkhla province from April 27 to 30 prior to the incident.

Police contacted him to report in for questioning but he did not show up. The victim and witnesses to the case had not filed a complaint, Pol Maj Gen Wichanwat said.

He said the two policemen who took the suspect back to the police station are also being investigated to determine whether they were involved.

"The people don't have to worry about [the police] protecting fellow officers who have done wrong because we don't. There are both good cops and bad cops, the bad being a minority," Pol Lt Gen Kamronwit said. "We have a reputation to uphold the law and if the investigation shows that they did commit crimes then they will be charged with criminal offences.”

On April 21, an 18-year-old woman lodged a complaint against Pol Sub Lt Thatree who while moonlighting as a taxi driver on Saturday allegedly abducted her and took her to an apartment, where she was raped multiple times.

A video clip showing Pol Sen Sgt Maj Worawit fleeing from at least two men who accused him of blackmailing a female friend into having sex with him at a hotel was posted on Youtube by a user named Kai Ja Dai Yin Mai Wa Siang Krai on April 27 and went viral.
