Ex-convict nabbed for gold theft

A man has been arrested with 104 baht weight of stolen gold ornaments worth about 2.1 million baht, Mukdahan police said Monday.

They alleged Jamorn Bhudkaew, 36, parked his motorbike outside a gold shop in Muang district on Monday and entered the shop wearing a mask and carrying a briefcase.

The suspect allegedly held a knife to the throat of shop owner Chatbadin Chantrasiri and demanded he put gold accessories into the briefcase.

As Mr Jamorn was leaving the shop and approaching his motorbike, he ran into a police officer. He fled in another direction.

He stole a motorcycle from a civilian and drove away on the Mukdahan–Kamcha-i road.

Police later cornered and apprehended him at a gas station about seven kilometres from the crime scene.

Investigators found the suspect had previously been arrested on drug charges and finished a jail term in August last year.

Police brought the man back to the store to re-enact his crime in public. They later took him into custody for further legal proceedings.
