Defence calls meeting on far South

Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwannatat called a meeting with national army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha and commanders of the armed forces on Wednesday afternoon to discuss the situation in the deep South, reports said.

The defence meeting follows the second round of peace talks between the National Security Council and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) separatist movement on Monday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The reports said ACM Sukumpol and the military officials would discuss ways to deal with expected violence after government officials rejected all of the BRN's five demands.

The resolution from Wednesday's meeting would be raised at a meeting with the NSC and Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Thursday.

On Monday, the Thai delegation gave the BRN one month to prove it represents southern insurgency groups by reducing the level of violence in the three southern border provinces of Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani.

The provinces have suffered an increased number of deadly bombings and shootings since the negotiations were announced last month in a steo to begin moves towards real peace negotiations.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to resume the talks on June 13.
