Narathiwat police booth attacked

A police booth in Narathiwat’s Yingor district was attacked by a gunman on Thursday morning, but no one was hurt, police said.

Pol Capt Poramin Mayakul, duty officer at Yingor police station, said he received a report about 7.30am that a gunman on a motorcycle had fired four shots at police on duty at the booth on Ramkomut road.

He said investigators found four bullet holes in the booth and a nearby chair. They also found four spent M16 cartridges on the road behind the old Yingor police station.

Sen Sgt Maj Yao Kuanui said he and Sgt Thirapong Naterung were on duty when the gunman fired on them. Luckily, a police patrol unit on a pickup truck arrived in at the scene at that time, forcing the assailant to flee.

Sen Sgt Maj Yao and Sgt Thirapong said they refrained from firing back at the gunman to avoid hurting people traveling to work during the rush hour.

Police blamed separatist militants.
