BTSC execs deny skytrain deal wrongdoing

Two Bangkok Transit System Co (BTSC) executives reported to the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) yesterday to acknowledge malfeasance charges related to skytrain contract extensions.

Both executives insisted the contract extensions were above board.

BTSC president Khiri Kanjanapas and managing director Surapong Laoha-anya met DSI special case investigator Pol Lt Col Thawal Mangkhang to formally acknowledge the charges.

Pol Lt Col Thawal said the DSI had found evidence linking the two BTSC executives to what he said were unlawful contract extensions to operate two skytrain routes signed in 2009 and 2010. The pair denied all charges and submitted written statements to DSI investigators.

Mr Khiri and Mr Surapong maintained that the BTSC operates the skytrain service legally, pointing out that the company had been invited by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to operate the two routes.

The DSI has accused the BMA of unlawfully granting 30-year contract extensions to the BTSC on the Saphan Taksin-Wong Wian Yai and the Bang Chak-Bearing skytrain extensions.
