Policeman held over PAO chief murder

KHON KAEN - A policeman was arrested on Monday in connection with the murder of the chief administrator of Khon Kaen Provincial Administration Organisation (PAO) on Friday.

Veerasak Chamnanpol, 37, from Nong Rua police station in Khon Kaen, was arrested at a checkpoint in Chiang Yuen district of Maha Sarakham as he was driving home from Sakon Nakhon with his family.
According to police investigators, Pol Snr Sgt Maj Veerasak was one of four men involved in the murder of chief administrator Suchart Kothum, 53, who was shot dead outside his home on Kasikorn Tungsan Road in Muang district on Friday.
Pol Snr Sgt Maj Veerasak was taken to the site of the killing to re-enact the crime.
According to police, Pol Snr Sgt Maj Veerasak identified Suchart and told the other men to murder him following an argument at the policeman's home.
When the victim left his house, Pol Snr Sgt Maj Veerasak allegedly made a call ordering the killing.
The killers, in a Toyota Vigo, then stopped Suchart in his vehicle before shooting him dead.
Pol Gen Chalermkiat Srivorakhan, deputy national police chief, said Pol Snr Sgt Maj Veerasak had confirmed that one of the alleged killers was Pol Lt Col Somjit Kaemprom, deputy superintendent of Nong Rua police station.
Pol Lt Col Somjit was the team leader who gunned down Suchart, Pol Gen Chalermkiat said.
"Two other suspects have not yet been identified because the suspect did not know who they were since they were Pol Lt Col Somjit's men," Pol Gen Chalermkiat said.
Investigators are trying find Pol Lt Col Somjit, he said.
Pol Maj Gen Sakda Techakriangkrai, deputy commissioner of Provincial Police Region 4, said Pol Lt Col Somjit had been absent from work since Sunday.
Pol Maj Gen Sakda said he had requested that Pol Lt Col Somjit be suspended pending an investigation.
Pol Snr Sgt Maj Veerasak was being held at Muang Khon Kaen police station and had been denied bail, Pol Maj Gen Sakda said.
