Pmove sets up camp at Government House
The People's Movement for a Just Society (Pmove) has urged the government to speed up the process of dealing with poverty and environmental issues.
About 1,000 members of the network yesterday set up camp around Government House.
Pmove, a network for marginalised groups, will submit its demands to Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra today.
These are experienced protesters and they know exactly what needs to be done for a stay that could last up to a month. PAWAT LAUPISARNTAKSIN
Jamnong Jitnirat, a member of the Community Network for Social and Political Reform, said the government had failed to show its sincerity in solving people's problems.
"The prime minister promised she would talk to us in November. We have yet to hear from her," Mr Jamnong said.
She had assigned her then deputy prime minister Yongyuth Wichaidith to take care of their grievances, but no progress was made.
He cited a case of a forest rights battle between locals and officers as an example, saying the problem was still lingering despite the fact the government agreed to suspend the case until a proper resolution on land disputes in forest areas had been made.
Twenty gypsies were involved in a similar land encroachment case in the South.
The land owners lodged a complaint with police against the gypsies after they entered the land, which had once belonged to the gypsies' ancestors.
He said the network wanted the government to establish a cultural zone for hilltribe people and gypsies, as proposed by the former Democrat-led government.
Saeng Sobbong, a 63-year-old resident of Phusang district of Phayao, said she wanted the government to provide her with community land title deeds.
They would enable her to own community land legally and prevent outsiders from trespassing.
Ms Saeng said outsiders own about 321 rai of land in her community.
Sodsai Srangsok, a key member of the Network of People Suffering from Biomass Power Plants, said the government should provide a fair and transparent process to issue biomass power plant licences.
Ms Sodsai said people in northeastern provinces such as Surin and Ubon Ratchathani were suffering ill-health as a result of the rapid growth of power plants.
