A new app developed by researchers at the University of Essex in England might remove a lot of the fuss and cost associated with hearing aids.
BioAid can turn a smartphone into a hearing aid, according to a recent article in Technology Review.
The app employs the high-quality microphones found in many smartphones and filters out unwelcome frequencies. The amplified sound is then delivered to the ear via the in-ear headset, just like any other sound transmitted by the phone.
The sound can be individually adjusted, making unnecessary the fussy adjustment which people currently endure at hearing-aid stores. iPhone users can already try out a version of BioAid.
There is still no Android version, since sound output continues to be delivered with too long a delay on Google's operating system.
