Bombs explode in Muang Pattani

Two bombs exploded in Muang district of Pattani just before dawn on Thursday, one putside the Diana Department Store and the other at a Toyota showroom, but there were no reports of casualties.

Police in Muang district said they received a call at 4.40am that a bomb had exploded in front of the department store. An Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team was sent, and found the bomb had gone off in a trash bin at the entrance of the department store.

While surveying the scene, the team found a gas cylinder, possibly a second explosive, at the stairs of a Toyota showroom about 200 metres from the Diana story. The team backed away and tried to remove the bomb with a hook, but it blew up during the retrieval process.

The bomb damaged the front area of the showroom and a car used by the EOD team.

No injuries were reported from the incident.

Police said they believed southern militants were responsible for the blasts. Insurgents have increased bomb attacks and drive-by killings since peace talks began beween the government and the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) two months ago.
