Coronavirus warning for flu sufferers

The Public Health Ministry has asked those suffering from the flu or colds, especially those who have just returned from the Middle East, to consult a doctor.

The alert came after France's Public Health Ministry on Wednesday identified the country's first case of a new Sars-like strain of coronavirus in a 65-year-old French man who had recently returned from the United Arab Emirates.

He was admitted to hospital in northern France last month after returning from his trip and is currently isolated in an intensive care unit.

The new strain of coronavirus is related to other viruses that cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to Sars. It was first discovered in humans in September last year.

There have been about 30 cases worldwide.

Most cases have been in Middle Eastern countries.

Disease Prevention and Control Department director-general Pornthep Siriwanarangsun said the government is not placing any restrictions on travelling to the Middle East.

However, he said anyone returning from the region should see a doctor if they have symptoms of the flu or colds.

Muslims who plan to make the Haj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia should get a health check-up after they return, Dr Pornthep said.
