A majority of Thais object to the Education Ministry's plan to close small schools and merge them into larger schools of reputedly higher quality, according to the result of Suan Dusit Poll published on Sunday.
The poll was conducted on 1,292 parents and children's guardians all over the country between May 8-11.
Asked whether they agreed to the Education Ministry's plan, a majority or 60.09% of the respondents disapproved of it, reasoning that students, teachers, parents and guardians would be affected. They said the plan would also affect relations between schools and communities.
However, 22.71% of the respondents were uncertain, while 17.20% agreed with the merger plan saying that school management would be more systematic and the children would be taken care of more thoroughly.
Asked what they were concerned about at the opening of the school term, most of them were worried about expenses such as tuition fees, school uniforms, learning equipment and children's safety in their trips between houses and schools.
