Karun's classroom clash makes online waves

A video clip showing banned Pheu Thai MP Karun Hosakul in a heated exchange with his Democrat Party rival Tankhun Jitt-itsara has been posted online.

An image from a video clip shows former Pheu Thai MP Karun Hosakul confronting Tankhun Jitt-itsara of the Democrat Party who appeared at a classroom in Don Muang district.

The video, which runs a little more than four minutes, was uploaded by YouTube user "spiceday" on Saturday.

According to the uploader, the incident took place on Saturday afternoon at a classroom in Boriboon Sin Suksa School in Don Muang district.

Mr Karun, the former Pheu Thai MP for Don Muang, was discussing the government's small, medium and large (SML) community loan project with residents. Supporters told Mr Karun that Mr Tankhun was in attendance and was recording the speech on his phone.

Mr Karun, along with some of his supporters, confronted Mr Tankhun, who was standing at the back, and accused the Democrat of violating his rights by filming him.

Mr Tankhun said he had been invited to the event by a school teacher and was merely recording the meeting's general atmosphere.

The situation escalated when Mr Tankhun said repeatedly: "Please don't hurt me. Don't use force." A woman in the crowd shouted at him: "Who hurt you? Stop lying."

As Mr Tankhun left the room and went outside, Mr Karun and several others followed him and berated him. "I'm going to leave now, never mind," Mr Tankhun told the crowd as he appeared to resume recording.

Mr Tankhun said he did not say anything during the meeting, but members of the crowd accused him of lying and said he was trying to inflame the situation. A woman later escorted Mr Tankhun away from the angry crowd.

On Friday, the Supreme Court's Election Cases Division banned Mr Karun from politics for five years after finding him guilty of defaming Mr Tankhun during the 2011 general election campaign.

A by-election will be called in the next 45 days to replace the ousted Pheu Thai MP.

Pheu Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit said potential candidates include Khunying Sudarat Keyurapan, Airports of Thailand chairman Sita Divari, Mr Karun's wife Pimchana Hosakul and an unnamed party member.
