Bangkok bus night fares stay same

The fares for non-air conditioned buses operating in Greater Bangkok during the late hours will remain unchanged, the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) said on Thursday.

BMTA director Opas Petmunee said the service cost of 25 bus routes had been set to rise by 1.5 baht during the 11pm-5am period.

He said the central committee supervising land transport had decided to increase the night time fares of red-cream and blue-cream coloured buses, from 6.5 baht to 8 baht and 7.5 baht to 9 baht respectively.

The adjustment was meant for all bus routes and had been scheduled to take effect on April 1. The BMTA, however, did not change the fee according to the new rate.

"The agency apologises for creating confusion in its previous announcement to raise night fares [by Thursday]," Mr Opas said, referring to the announcement of the fare rise on Wednesday.

He added that the BMTA will propose to the committee that the rates should remain the same so that it doesn't cause problems with the general commuting public.
